Nancy Campbell Honored At YWCA Tribute to Women for Community Service
Altoona, PA—Nancy Campbell, Director of Public Relations at Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, was one of six women honored April 29, 2008, at the YWCA Tribute to Women held at the Casino at Lakemont Park. Nancy was recognized in the category of Community Service Volunteer. This award is presented each year to a woman working as a nonpaid volunteer.
Nancy accepted her award by saying, “It is truly an honor to be included with this wonderful group of ladies and I congratulate each of you on your award. I am grateful to the leaders of the YWCA for this special honor. For as long as I can remember, the YWCA has been a symbol of help and hope for the women of America”
Nancy was born in Savannah, GA, and is married to Bill Campbell whom she describes as her “biggest motivator as he leads by example.” She and Bill have five sons and daughters between them and thirteen grandchildren. She is described as effortlessly and tirelessly dedicating her time and energy to making a difference in the lives of others who are suffering from life threatening and debilitating diseases. Nancy demonstrates that same dedication when working with the Future Farmers of America (FFA), an organization that helps teach young adults business and life skills and exposes them to new opportunities.
Since the year 2000, she has Co-chaired “Lobsterfest for MS” and was recognized at the 1999 Annual Meeting of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Pittsburgh for outstanding commitment to the MS Society.
Since 1986 Nancy has been a volunteer for the annual MS Walk and since 1996 she has been the Chairperson of Hoss’s Fore FFA Golf Tournament and has participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, where she also helps to cook and serve breakfast to all participants. Between 1994 and 2003, Nancy served as President of the Pennsylvania FFA Foundation and was instrumental in launching the FFA Foundations current million-dollar “Bright Future” endowment campaign.
In 2001, Nancy’s compassion and support of FFA was rewarded with two Honorary American FFA Degrees from the Commonwealth of PA Department of Agriculture: the first in recognition of her contribution to agriculture and the quality of life in PA and the second in recognition of her outstanding contribution made to youth through agricultural education and the FFA. The second award was received at the seventy-fourth FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, and is the highest degree of recognition that can be conferred at the National FFA Convention.
Nancy rates receiving the Blair County Chamber of Commerce 2007 Athena Award and the Pennsylvania Business Central Top 100 People Award as two accomplishments of which she is especially proud.
Nancy also chooses to serve her community in other ways as well. She served as a member of the Blair County Arts Foundation Board of Directors, has been a member of the St. Francis University Board of Trustees since 2003, and in 2002 served as a member of the Judicial Advisory committee of the Governor for selecting candidates for the Blair County judgeship position.
Nancy knows the YWCA “has been a constant, positive force in the lives of young women, and has changed the way folks view differences in others.”
Nancy Campbell believes “opportunities abound for women who are able and willing to make the sacrifices necessary to be successful” and she now has the chance to do things to help make the world a better place for her children and grandchildren.
Nancy humbly ended her acceptance speech by stating, “Everyone who knows my husband knows that he lives and breathes the concept of giving to and helping others. What kind of wife would I be if I did not do all that I can to assist him? What kind of mother would I be if I did not teach my children by example to give back? What kind of grandmother would I be if I did not do all that I can to help make this world a better place for my grandchildren? I was blessed with wonderful parents who instilled God’s word in my heart and taught me what a special privilege it is to have been born in the United States of America. I love God and I love my country.”
